JGA designed the interiors for this 12,000 square foot summer house and outbuildings in the Canadian Gulf Islands. The site is a wooded peninsula with magnificent water views on three sides. The clients, a large, active family, wanted a sophisticated yet livable home, able to accommodate their guests and extended family, and the many activities they enjoy.
The interior detailing represents a modern interpretation of the English Arts and Crafts movement. An eclectic mix of antiques and custom pieces, along with the Client’s growing collection of Pacific Northwest art, creates an atmosphere of relaxed elegance. A restrained palette of materials, color and fabric contribute to the modern take on traditional style.
The house is configured around an enclosed entry courtyard that offers a terrace protected from the wind. The first floor centers on a grandly scaled living room, flanked by the entry and dining room. The mellow patina of antiques and antique rugs combine with luxurious fabrics to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The east wing contains a large kitchen and family room, with a small guest suite tucked next to the family entry. The west wing houses a large guest suite, octagonal library and stair hall. The deep mahogany of the library is complemented by rich velvets and custom rug to create a cozy space.
The master suite on the second floor is centered over the living room, with his and her dressing rooms and baths to either side. A soft palette of greens and blues was developed from the antique Swedish rug. Her bathroom and dressing room are detailed in elegant cream paneling. His bath and dressing rooms are paneled in teak, with a Japanese soaking tub in his bathroom. His study, simply detailed in walnut, is over the octagonal library, while her more refined and luxurious study and painting studio are in the same wing. Two bedrooms and a gym are in the east wing are accessed by a back stair from the family room. A pool house and boathouse provide additional sleeping quarters when required. The house is a reflection of the client’s taste and the natural beauty of the site that surrounds it.
