The renovation of a 1960’s ranch house in a well established neighborhood was inspired by the desire to give a sense of character and place to a non-descript house. The existing red tile roof was to be retained, while existing horizontal aluminum windows and clapboard exterior walls were reconfigured with elegant casement windows and stucco. Windows in all major rooms were replaced with french doors, opening the interiors to new terraces, integrating the house into the surrounding landscape.
The new entry courtyard provides a secluded space for morning coffee. In the living room, a dated lava rock fireplace and planter were removed, and a wall of bookshelves added to modulate the large space. The original cramped kitchen was replaced by a new kitchen, open to, but discrete from, the living room and dining room. The master bedroom suite was reconfigured to provide a more elegant dressing room and bathroom.
A collection of mid-century furniture was chosen for sculptural shape and form. A palette of limed oak cabinetry, wood floors, slate and stainless steel, along with a warm palette of color creates an elegant atmosphere for modern life.
